Thanks for your comment, JaHoog -- I actually used MediaMonkey to help with organizing as well, and I feel your pain on the genres. One genre rarely fits all. I have since written some tools to automate some things - will post them soon. Keep rockin'!

Nice article, I have been using a similar system over the years. All new music sits in a folder to be processed. I use Mediamonkey to organise as it is many times more powerful than iTunes. I also try to get album art that is greater than 500 x 500 pixels so it looks alright when in full screen coverflow. Genre is not generally done properly as I can't make a good choice on what should be used for every song. It would be better if a tag system was introduced for the metadata, so you could have different labels for a song.

Actually, at one point I was pretty hot and heavy about images, and you're actually not far from my methodology (organizing by date). At some point I'll put that together (actually I wrote it a long time ago -- will see if I can dig it out and repost) Thanks for the comment!

hmmm
how about images?
i once had a 'great idea' to categorize my photos-then i realized it really was a shitty idea. . .now i just file them by month/year - i know i'm missing the boat

i think i'll work in this plan for my music - i like it-very thorough and nicely detailed guys

Great post Ed. Very insightful suggestions for getting your music organized. Another option that some may choose is to make back-ups of CDs or create actual CDs of their downloaded music. I like having tangible CDs and have created actual music CDs with cover art. I used a disc labeling device called the Dymo DiscPainter to do it. It was a fast and painless procedure. The DiscPainter easily printed the original cover art directly on CDs which I had burned entire albums.
